Q.    How long does the season last?

Sign-ups are in late January to early February. Practice begins in March. Games begin late March or early April. Usually, 14 games are scheduled which includes the tournament at the end of the season.

Q.  What league does my child play in?

A.     LYBA provides five leagues.

5-6 year olds             Tee Ball

7-8 year olds             Machine Pitch

9-10 year olds           Minors

11-12 year olds         Majors

13-14 year olds         Dixie Boys

Q. Why did the age cut-off date change from July 31 to April 30?

A. The July 31 date was a hold-over from the 1950’s when Little League was first organized in Williamsport, PA.  The July 31 cut-off date was the same used by the Williamsport schools.  Since the majority of youth baseball is played March through June, baseball organizations felt the April 30 date was more appropriate.  Dixie was the last baseball organization to adopt the April 30 cut-off date.  While the new date allows older players more time to develop, it has the adverse effect of not allowing some players to play with their school classmates or others to move up to a new league this year.  The LYBA Board did not feel a change was necessary, but was forced to adopt the new date so our teams could qualify for post-season play.

Q. What does the LYBA provide?

A.  Uniform shirt & hat; lighted, professionally maintained fields; batting cages; catching equipment; team practice equipment; insurance and umpires

Q.  What equipment are the parents responsible for?

A.  Uniform pants, socks & belt; baseball glove and batting helmet with faceguard

Q.  Is Skill Day mandatory?

A.  No, but participation is highly recommended.  Skills Day can be used by parents as an additional registration day, allowing them to avoid paying late fees.  Skills Day also allows coaches to fairly evaluate the   abilities of prospective players.  This evaluation helps the league in its efforts to field equitable teams and improves competition throughout the league.

Q. What is the organizational structure of the LYBA?

A.  Livingston Youth Baseball Association, Inc. (LYBA) is incorporated under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act.  Its purpose is to foster amateur sports competition within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Membership of the organization consists of parents, step-parents, or legal guardians of children who: are identified on the child’s registration form as a parent, step-parent or legal guardian; live within the LYBA franchise; are registered to play in the LYBA and have paid the annual registration fee.

Management of the corporation is vested in its Board of Directors who serve staggered 3-year terms. Approximately one-third of the Board is up for election at the annual membership meeting, held the first Saturday in May.  Nominations for the Board of Directors are made by a nominating committee and may also be submitted by any member of the LYBA as prescribed by the LYBA by-laws. Currently there are fifteen directors serving on the Board.  Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer) are elected by the Board of Directors and serve a one-year term.   LYBA’s fiscal year runs October to September.

A Competition Committee is comprised of no less than three Board members, appointed by the President.  The Competition Committee conducts the annual Skills Day, orientation for the Managers and Coaches of each league, conducts the draft of each league, conducts the All-Star selection meeting and hears appeals of actions taken on the playing field.  Team Managers, Coaches and Umpires are under the direction of the Competition Committee.

The LYBA currently has three Dixie franchises:    Dixie Youth - T-Ball (5-6 yr old); Machine Pitch (7-8 yr old); 9-10 Yr Old Live Pitch and 11-12 Yr Old Live Pitch   (Two divisions: American & National within each age group); Dixie Boys – 13-14 Yr Old; Dixie Majors – 15 & Older

All-Stars are elected by a majority vote of head coaches within each division.  The election is by secret ballot and results are announced only after the completion of each league’s end-of-season tournament.  The number of All-Stars will be set by the Board, but may not exceed the maximum number allowed by Dixie.  The Coach and First Assistant Coach shall be nominated by the league coaches and approved by the Board by closed ballot at a meeting of the Board following the election of All-Stars.
